Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are two of the world’s finest golfers. Since both of them were talented, the golfers had developed a professional rivalry between them. Recently, Tiger’s former caddy Steve Williams had shared an interesting fact about their relationship.
On his podcast ‘Chasing Majors,’ Williams shared that Tiger had stopped Mickelson from winning majors. (The story begins around the 37-minute mark of the podcast.)
Williams talks about how interesting was it to closely watch two of the best golfers at the time fighting for the major titles. “Phil was an absolutely fantastic player in Tiger’s era,” William said. “You know, he’s next best player in Tiger’s era.”
Woods’ former caddy explained that Mickelson knew that since Tiger was competing, it was hard for him to win the title. “It’s really hurting him (Mickelson), you know. His major tally is getting started because Tiger’s there,” added Williams.
Williams was chuckling when he said that Tiger knew how good he was playing and was stopping Mickelson from winning a major. “It’s a great battle that would remain for a number of years,” Williams added.

Williams and the co-host of the podcast, Evin Priest, have been talking about the 2022 U. S. Open, where the two discussed how Mickelson couldn’t win majors of years because of Woods. Woods had won the U. S. Open of 2002 with an overall score of 3-under 277. Meanwhile, Mickelson had to compromise with second place with an even-par overall score.
Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson – their history at the majors
Although Mickelson had turned pro four years prior to Woods, he has only won six majors compared to Woods’ 15.
Tiger began his hunt for the majors as soon as he joined the PGA Tour in 1996; he won his first at the 1997 Masters. Woods has even got the unique opportunity to hold all the majors at the same time. Although many have won the career slams, he was the only player to win all four of them in a row.
On the other hand, Mickelson had won over 20 PGA events before his first-ever major at the 2004 Masters. He won his last major at the 2021 PGA Championship at the age of 50, making him the oldest ever to win a major.
Tiger Woods is considered the greatest golfer of all time. And he has ruled over the golf world in his prime era, the 2000s. As a golfer playing at the same time as Tiger, it was hard for Mickelson to win a championship where Tiger was competing. However, his determination and hard work helped him establish his name as one of the best as well.
