One month has passed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On the one hand, just as the Russian military is facing intense resistance from the Ukrainian army, on the other hand, various Ukrainian cities have been devastated by Russian bombings. But Russia has not yet captured any major cities in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russian Army Chief Valery Gerasimov has said that the main target of their war is now the eastern part of Ukraine. Pro-Russian rebels in the region have been fighting for independence against Ukrainian government forces for some time.
Russia's local media quoted the BBC as saying that senior Russian military officials met on Friday to discuss the situation in Ukraine. At the meeting, the Russian military chief said Russia's main goal now was to "completely liberate" eastern Ukraine.
During the meeting, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russia was considering two options for its special military operation. Occupying an entire Ukraine. The other is just to take control of Danbas.
This statement by the Russian military officials shows that the Russian forces have not yet achieved the desired success in the war in Ukraine. This may have been in the face of strong resistance from Ukraine. So far, 93 percent of Luhansk and 54 percent of Donetsk are under Russian control, said Sergei Rudsko, head of the Russian military's General Staff's operations department.
'300 killed' in Mariupol theater attack
Russia, meanwhile, attacked a theater in the southern port city of Mariupol last week, AFP reported. It is estimated that 300 people were killed in the attack. All of them are civilians.
Citing eyewitnesses, the city authorities reported the information in a telegram on the messaging app today. City officials claim that Russian forces knew about the civilians in the theater building.
After last week's attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said thousands of people had taken refuge in the theater. Most of them are women and children. Nearly 100,000 Mariupol residents are living without food, water and electricity in the face of Russian attacks.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has found a mass grave in the town of Mariupol. It is estimated that there may have been around 200 bodies. Matilda Bogner, head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, said the mass grave had been identified based on information obtained from satellites. However, he said that not all the bodies in the grave belonged to civilians.
A few days ago, local leaders said they thought more than 3,000 people had died in the war in Mariupol alone. Many bodies could not be removed from the road due to the risk during the fighting. Later many such bodies were placed in mass graves. A Russian attack on a medical center in Kharkiv has killed at least four civilians, locals say.
There are also reports of Russia retreating from many areas. Reuters reports that Ukrainian troops have liberated several cities east of the capital, Kiev, from Russian occupation until further notice.
Volodymyr Borishenko, mayor of Borispol, east of Kiev, said civilians had been told to leave the city in order to push back Russian troops. Of these, 20,000 people have left safely. Earlier, Ukraine demanded that Russia recapture Makarev, a town on the outskirts of the capital Kiev.
Earlier in the day, a village between Borispol and Borovari was liberated from Russian occupation, Mayor Volodymyr Borishenko said. Ukrainian forces are trying to encircle Russian forces in the towns of Irpin, Bucha and Hostomel, northwest of Kiev.
