The 2021 season finale in Abu Dhabi saw its fair share of controversy. Arguably, the series of decisions made by the then race director, Michael Masi, handed the title to Verstappen. The fiasco is still rearing its ugly head in comments made by Toto Wolff.
The Mercedes team principal recently spewed fire in the direction of the ex-FIA race director.
Toto Wolff is still angry at Michael Masi
The Austrian executive has been one of the most vocal personalities against Masi. As it turns out, Wolff and Mercedes still hold a grudge against Masi and believe he’s responsible for Lewis Hamilton’s 2021 title loss. Recently, Wolff made some pretty scathing comments about the ex-race director.
Wolff said, “I really want to tell you, without patronising you, that you need to take criticism on board and develop from there. Lewis [Hamilton] does it every day, but you are a guy who always seems to know better’,”
He believed Masi was immune to any feedback and that he still doesn’t hold himself accountable for the whole fiasco.

Toto also went on to add “He was a liability for the sport because everybody kept talking about Abu Dhabi and the race director, and the race director should not …[but] someone who does the job and makes sure the race is run according to the regulations.”
This season will see the duties of a race director being shared by Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas. The 2 will be in charge of alternate races this year.
Hamilton’s mixed fortune this season
The Britton has had a mixed bag of results to kick off the new season. Hamilton, with some help from lady luck, managed a podium in the season opener in Bahrain. The second round in Jeddah saw him struggle and just finish in the points in P10.
The last race in Australia also saw a strong performance by Hamilton. He managed a P4 while his teammate Russell went on to pick up a P3. Russell currently leads his teammate in the driver’s standings by 9 points.

The next set of races will see F1 move to Europe. The first race is set to be the Emiliano Romagna GP in Italy in 2 weeks. There, fans will get to witness this season’s first Sprint Qualifying.
