Alison Lee’s Beautiful Take On Golf, Mental Health and the Pressures of the Game

In the most recent set of reflection stories from the LPGA, we see veteran tour member Alison Lee share some beautiful thoughts. The LPGA Instagram page had also gone on to highlight specific extracts from these thoughts that were inspiring, to say the least.

The LPGA has recently started its new reflection series called the ‘Drive On‘ series, which will see multiple players take the time out to talk about their lives, golf, and everything in between. We’re excited to see a refreshing change of dialogue that gives us a better look into the psyche of some of these players rather than just their competitive spirit and their skills with a set of clubs. Well, to be honest, we’re excited to see both.

The First of the Series; Alison Lee

The ‘Drive On’ Series opens with one of our personal long-time favorites and quite a ‘Drive’ of a message. The former No. 1 Amateur Golfer and fan-favorite, Alison Lee, goes on to start with a message that hits home with not just most golfers, but even people if you could minus golf from it.

In an extract from her piece ‘Two Sides of an Unforgiving Game’, Alison goes on to say, “People don’t see that side of golf. They don’t see the anxiety, the mental anguish on both the women’s and men’s tours. The pressures that are set on us by ourselves and society.”

She added, “We are all just one shot away from believing we are the number one player in the world or one shot from wanting to throw it all away.” Lee’s words hit home with the general message of the month for mental health awareness and we appreciate her articulation in managing to do so thoughtfully.

She also goes on to describe her constant relationship with the game, saying, “I am still here. Battling through these struggles every day, because I have to stay strong. Because I love this crazy game of golf with everything it gives and everything it takes. No path is ever easy, and no two paths are ever the same. That is what it takes to show up every week and unlock your full potential.”
