SpiceJet, the country's private airline, was en route to Durgapur from Mumbai, India. There were about 200 passengers and crew. Everything was going well. However, disaster struck shortly before landing. Everyone got frustrated by the strong shock. At least 16 people on board were injured.
The Boeing 737 left Mumbai Airport around 5:15 pm on Sunday. Among the passengers was a businessman named Amit Baul. He told NDTV about the horrible experience of the flight that day.
Amit Baul said his home is in Durgapur. He has flown on the Mumbai-Durgapur route several times in the last four months. Didn't get in trouble any day. Everything was normal last Sunday. The passengers were busy with themselves.
It takes about two hours to fly from Mumbai to Durgapur. Amit felt a slight jolt before the SpiceJet plane landed on Sunday. Thinking everything was normal, he fastened his seatbelt. However, the situation became dire when the plane started to descend. Amit said the last 15 to 16 minutes of the journey was the worst time of his life.
Describing the time, the businessman said, "I didn't know if we were caught in a storm. The plane starts spinning up and down and right and left. It looked like a rubber ball. '
Amit tightened his seatbelt to control himself. "It's like I've been thrown out of a 100-story building," he said. It was being thrown up again in a matter of seconds. '
Meanwhile, many passengers forgot to fasten their seatbelts. As a result, they were severely injured in the shock. Two passengers sitting next to Amit were also injured. A woman was sitting in front of them with her 11-year-old daughter. They fell from their seats. Both suffered head injuries. The woman was injured and fell to the floor.
Amit said all the passengers on the plane were crying and screaming. Food scraps and drinks were spilled. Parts of a few seats were also broken. Many are injured. In the meantime, the pilot was repeatedly asking everyone to fasten their seatbelts.
Amit suddenly saw blood on the roof of the plane. "It simply came to our notice then. But when I landed at 7:15 pm, I felt like I was back from the brink of death. '
After landing, the passengers of the plane thanked the pilot. But something worse was waiting for them. An ambulance arrived at the airport an hour later to pick up the injured.
Amit said that no doctor was present at the airport. Allegedly, one of them was giving painkillers and bandages to the injured. There were less wheelchairs than needed. It is clear that there is a shortage of minimum medical services at Durgapur Airport.
The Civil Aviation Authority of India has ordered an inquiry into the incident. In a statement, they said the aircraft's automatic pilot (auto-pilot) system became useless for two minutes before landing. As a result, pilots have to work hard to operate the aircraft.
