Death toll in Iran protests rises to 76: IHR



 At least 76 people have been killed so far in ongoing protests in Iran over the death of Kurdish teenager Masa Amini in police custody. They were killed in the crackdown by the authorities. On Monday, Oslo-based human rights organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) gave this information. News from AFP.


The IHR had previously put the death toll at 57. But yesterday they updated this number by increasing it.


However, Iranian authorities say 41 people have been killed so far. They mentioned that there are some members of the security forces among them.


Iranian officials said yesterday that more than 1,200 people have been arrested in connection with the protests.


On September 13, Masa was arrested in Tehran by the 'Niti Police' for not wearing the hijab in accordance with 'proper rules'. He fell ill in police custody after his arrest. He was admitted to a hospital in Tehran. He died on September 16 while undergoing treatment. Massa's death sparked protests across Iran.


Demonstrations are taking place every day on the roads of different areas of the country, including the capital Tehran. Eyewitnesses said that there was a protest last night as well.


Protesters in Tehran chanted slogans calling for the downfall of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Slogan by slogan they said, 'let the dictator die'.


IHR released some pictures of the protest. In the picture, the protesters continue their protest despite the security forces firing tear gas shells.


In a video published by the Norwegian-based Kurdish human rights organization Hengao, it can be seen that women are protesting by taking off their hijab in the Sanandaz area of ​​Iran's Kurdistan province. Motorists are honking their horns in solidarity with them.


Iran has already summoned the ambassadors of the UK and Norway for inciting protests. The European Union has condemned the crackdown on protesters.


Meanwhile, Germany has summoned the Iranian ambassador. Canada has announced sanctions against Iran.


Director of IHR Mahmoud Amiri Moghaddam said, they are calling on the international community to take concrete and united practical steps to stop the killing and torture of protesters.


Mahmoud Amiri also said that video footage and death certificates obtained by the IHR show that direct fire was fired at the protesters.


Protesters pelted stones at security forces. Police vehicles and government buildings were set on fire.


Iranian authorities say around 450 people have been arrested in the country's northern Mazandaran province. More than 700 people were arrested in neighboring Gilan last Saturday. Apart from this, some other protesters were arrested in other areas.


According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, an organization working on the rights of journalists, 20 journalists were among those arrested.
