Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war. "This is not the time for war," he said. In response, Putin also promised to end the war "as soon as possible".
The leader held a meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing SCO regional conference in Uzbekistan. This information is known from the summary of the meeting given by the Kremlin after the meeting. Al-Jazeera news
Modi arrived in Samarkand on Thursday evening to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. He officially joined the conference today, taking a group photo with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and leaders of other member states.
Modi told Putin, 'I think this is not the time for war. I have spoken to you on the phone about this. He further said that the whole world can be united through democracy, diplomacy and discussion.
In response, Putin blamed Ukraine, saying that Kiev has ignored negotiations and is determined to achieve its goals through war. He also said, 'I know your (Modi) position on the Ukraine war. I also know your concerns, which you have constantly expressed.'
"We will do everything we can to end this war quickly," Putin said. But unfortunately the other side i.e. the leadership of Ukraine has rejected the negotiation process and said they want to achieve the goal through military means.
New Delhi and Moscow have long-standing ties dating back to the Cold War, and Russia is still India's largest arms supplier.
Since the Russia-Ukraine war began last February, Russia now controls about a fifth of Ukraine.
Moscow said it needed "special military operations" to prevent Ukraine from being used as a platform for Western aggression and to protect Russian speakers.
Kyiv and its Western allies dismissed these arguments as baseless pretexts for imperialist aggression and called on Russia to unconditionally retract their statements.
