A statement from the Ukrainian military said that Russian Lieutenant General Andrei Mordevich had been killed in the attack. He was the commander of the 8th Combined Armed Forces of the Southern Military District of the Russian Army.
However, the Ukrainian armed forces have not been able to confirm the claim.
Ukraine has claimed that five Russian generals have been killed so far. Earlier, Kiev claimed that four Russian soldiers had been killed in the fighting.
Analysts estimate that about 20 generals were sent to lead Russia's special military operation in Ukraine at the behest of President Putin.
