The alliance's decision on whether Ukraine can formally begin the process of becoming a member of the European Union (EU) will be known by the end of next week. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave the information. Khabar Al-Jazeera.
The head of the European Commission has paid a surprise visit to the Ukrainian capital Kiev. There, on Saturday, he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky. At the meeting, Ursula von der Leyen briefed President Zelensky on the EU's position.
This is Ursula von Lien's second visit to Kiev since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "You (Zelensky) have done a lot to strengthen the rule of law," he told a joint news conference with Zelensky after the meeting. But reforms are still needed. You (Ukraine) may decide not to start the EU process by the end of next week.
Zelensky, on the other hand, said the whole of Europe was being targeted by Moscow's aggression. Ukraine is just the first stage of the aggression. The positive attitude of EU members towards the start of Ukraine's membership process will be an important decision in determining Europe's future.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. Earlier, Ukraine had expressed interest in joining the EU. After the Russian invasion, the country's demand for joining the European Union became stronger.
However, the process is not easy at all. According to analysts, if EU member states agree to Ukraine's application by the end of next week, the country will still have to go through a lengthy process. For this, the consent of all the 27 members of the alliance will be required at the beginning. The alliance will then begin talks with Ukraine on the terms of membership. This process can last from a few months to a few years.
